The Next Step
Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my journey. I am closing on the purchase of my new home.
Three weeks ago, I sold the house that held so many memories. During that time, I had opportunities to stay with others, but I chose something different. I stayed in an extended stay hotel. Some people might find that strange, but I understood that everyone has routines, rhythms to their lives, and I didn’t want to disturb that peace. More importantly, I realized that isolation can sometimes offer something we rarely allow ourselves—clarity.
For the first time in a long while, there were no distractions. No obligations beyond my job. Just quiet.
And in that quiet, I started searching within myself.
Over these few weeks of solitude, I went back to something simple: pen and paper. I began journaling again, letting my thoughts move freely without expectation. Somewhere along the way, another spark appeared. I started writing down the beginnings of a new story idea. I’m not entirely sure where it will lead, but I’m excited that the creative wheels are turning again.
It reminded me of something important about myself.
I’ve spent so much of my life in survival mode—working, caring for others, pushing forward through responsibilities—that I never truly stopped to ask a simple question: Who am I when I’m not doing those things?
Recently, while talking with my father on the phone, he mentioned that I sounded lost. As much as it surprised me to hear it out loud, he was right. My life has always been go, go, go. Now things have slowed down. I have one job to go to and only myself to take care of.
You would think that freedom would feel exciting.
Instead, I found myself in a bit of a slump.
These past three weeks haven’t been bad by any means, but they have been eye-opening. I’ve realized that I need to learn how to make time for myself and discover who I truly am outside of responsibility and survival.
What I do know is this: I am happiest when I am creating.
Whether it’s writing, painting, designing, or simply bringing an idea to life, creativity brings me peace. But I also know I need to learn how to step outside, explore the world around me, and enjoy my surroundings.
And that brings me back to today.
Today I step into a new home. My old one will always hold a special place in my heart, filled with memories and moments that helped shape who I am. But this new home represents something different—possibility.
It’s in a new environment, which means new places to discover, new people to meet, and new experiences waiting to happen. It may even become the place where new stories are written, new ideas are born, and creativity has room to grow.
Change can feel uncertain, but sometimes it’s exactly what we need.
And today, I can feel that change beginning.
